District nurses provide skilled
nursing care in the patient’s home
environment. The district-nursing
sister will assess the patients
health needs and arrange for nurses
to visit accordingly. She will refer
onto other agencies to ensure that
the patient’s non-nursing needs are
also met appropriately. District
nurses work with patients and their
families to provide care, advice and
emotional support throughout the
course of their illness.

The Chiropody/podiatry
department provides a local service
for people of all ages. There is a
self-referral system in place where
new patients are required to attend
an assessment clinic. Please ask at
reception for a form to complete and
send off.
Speech and Language Therapy 449 8660

The Speech and Language
Therapist holds a clinic in the
centre 3 days a week. This is a
paediatric clinic covering the
Currie and Balerno areas. Children
can be referred in a number of ways
– via the Health Visitor, GP and
school.

Physiotherapists specialise in
treating joint and muscle problems.
Patients are assessed on their
initial visit with follow up
treatment as required. Treatment
often involves exercise regimes
which patients are expected to
follow at home. A doctor’s referral
is required to see a
Physiotherapist.
If you are physically unable to
attend the Physiotherapy Department
your doctor can arrange for you to
have your treatment at home.

There is a community midwife
based at the medical centre. As soon
as your pregnancy is confirmed she
will provide you with all the care
and information you will require to
have a healthy, happy pregnancy.
During your pregnancy she arranges
informal Parenthood Educational
Evenings where mums and dads come
together to share knowledge and
experiences. The midwife’s booking
clinic is held on a Tuesday
afternoon. Antenatal clinics are
held each Wednesday afternoon and
Thursday morning. She will visit you
at home following the birth of your
baby. |
